Despite a sharp decline, Toyota maintained its leading position in the auto market in the first half of the year, selling 22,338 vehicles.

Its sales fell by 17% year-on-year amid a general decline in auto demand, data from Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association shows.

VinFast was second with 20,000 units (all electric), followed by Hyundai (19,293 units) and Ford (15,487 units).

Toyota sold 15 models, the most by any brand, but none topped sales in its segment.

The sedan Vios contributed nearly 19% of Toyota sales with 4,215 vehicles being sold.

The Japanese brand also offered six products in the hybrid segment, and sold 1,682 units.

Overall, 154,265 cars were sold in the first six months, down 7% year-on-year, according to data from the association and Hyundai Thanh Cong, which sells Hyundai vehicles.
