South Korea’s Hyundai and Kia sold nearly 106,000 cars in Vietnam last year, or nearly half of all locally made cars sold.

Hyundai remained the top local player with sales of 60,401 units followed by Kia with 45,532 and Vietnamese carmaker Vinfast with 35,723.

Hyundai and Kia are assembled in Vietnam from complete knocked-down (CKD) kits, the former by TC Motor in the northern Ninh Binh Province and the latter by Truong Hai (Thaco) in the central Quang Nam Province.

Thaco also assembles Mazda and Peugeot vehicles.

Toyota said it sold 69,002 units last year, of which 30,026 were locally made.

In the first quarter of 2022 Kia is the market leader with sales of 16,795 vehicles, followed by Hyundai with 15,874 and Mazda with 7,099.
