Singapore to import 1.2 GW electricity from Vietnam by 2035

Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd would source it from offshore wind power plants and potentially other sources developed by Petrovietnam Technical Services Corporation, a release from the Singapore Energy Market Authority said Tuesday.

The electricity will be transmitted from Vietnam to Singapore through new subsea cables that will run a distance of around 1,000km.

The imports from Vietnam could potentially constitute 10% of Singapore’s requirements, The Straits Times newspaper reported.

Sembcorp is a subsidiary of energy firm Sembcorp Industries.

Vietnam and Singapore signed a memorandum of understanding for energy cooperation in October last year.

In 2021 Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong announced plans to import up to 4 GW of low-carbon electricity by 2035.

Approvals have also been given for importing 2 GW from Indonesia and 1 GW from Cambodia.
