A new government decree that takes effect next month requires social media users to be authenticated by phone number or ID before they can post, comment or livestream.

All platforms with more than 100,000 users have to comply with the requirement from Dec. 25.

This supersedes a previous regulation that only required users to provide an email or phone number for registration.

The platforms are also required to store the data of Vietnamese users including their full name, date of birth and phone or ID number.

Users need to be authenticated within 90 days of the decree coming into effect.

Children under 16 will have to register using their parents’ identification.

The decree also requires platforms to remove illegal contents within 24 hours of being informed by authorities.

Temporary or permanent suspensions must be imposed on accounts or pages that repeatedly violate content regulations.
