In May authorities had carried out a slew of raids in the downtown area and found several stores selling suspected counterfeits.
Many stores on Tran Phu, Hung Vuong and Nguyen Thai Hoc streets, popular tourist spots, were selling cheap "branded" items.
When the inspectors arrived at The Black Label shop at 156 Tran Phu, the store pulled down its shutters and covered its front but continued to sell goods to foreign customers inside.
CoCo Accessory & Bag at 144 Tran Phu was selling bags, wallets and shoes bearing luxury brand names priced at a few hundred thousand dong to VND2 million.
Two other shops, Gu at 27 Hung Vuong and Mirror Shop at 15 Nguyen Thai Hoc, had on display numerous products of unclear origin.
Nearly 2,000 items were seized during the raids, and several businesses were fined.
Gu had to pay VND77.5 million for selling counterfeit goods and VND45 million for trading products of unknown origin.
Black Label Shop was fined over VND111 million and ordered to destroy 127 fake items.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade had ordered the crackdown following the government’s orders to tackle smuggling, commercial fraud and counterfeit goods across the country.
