Chinese electric vehicle maker Wuling has slashed the price of its cheapest Mini EV version by 19% to VND194 million (US$7,625).

It has a range of 120 kilometers on a full charge. The most expensive version, which runs 170 kilometers, costs VND259 million.

The vehicle is designed for urban customers and do not need long-distance capabilities.

The Mini EV is assembled by TMT Motors in northern Hung Yen Province.

EVs doubled their market share in the country to 10% of cars sold from 2022 to 2023, the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA) said.

China remains a small source market, supplying 1,987 of the 6,955 fully assembled cars imported to Vietnam in January, the customs office said, without specifics on how many of those were EVs. But business plans are accelerating.

Vietnam said last month that Chery would be the first Chinese EV maker to build a plant in the country. BYD also plans to construct a car factory in the country, where it already assembles iPads and other electronics.

A Facebook page for GAC's Aion showed two models to debut in June. At a Ho Chi Minh City dealership, a salesman told Nikkei Asia that MG will expand to EVs in Vietnam, where it now sells gas cars.
