Vietnam’s semiconductor industry, once largely limited to outsourced design work, has taken steps forward, with two factory projects announced in January 2026.

The semiconductor industry is nearly five decades old, but had limited visibility for much of that time, and even nearly shut down at one point.

There have for long been several dozen firms in the sector, most of them foreign-owned.

Over the past three years, following the issuance of the national semiconductor industry development strategy, several breakthroughs have been announced, including the groundbreaking of fabrication facilities and advanced testing and packaging plants, laying the groundwork for semiconductor chips to be developed by Vietnamese companies.
