In the first leg of the final, Vietnam beat Thailand 2-1 at Viet Tri Stadium thanks to a brace from naturalized striker Nguyen Xuan Son. The only goal of Thailand was scored by center-back Chalermsak Aukkee near the end of the match.

The away goal rule is not used in ASEAN Cup this year. That means Vietnam will enter the match with a one-goal lead, while Thailand will have the home advantage.

Xuan Son is aiming for the player of the tournament and top scorer awards, having already scored 7 goals in 4 matches. If Vietnam win the title, he is likely to receive both of the awards.
