Vietnam beat Indonesia on penalty shootout to win AFF U23 Championship

Vietnam defended their AFF U23 Championship title with a 6-5 victory against Indonesia in penalty shootout in Rayong Stadium Saturday night.

  • This time, Van Chuan guessed the direction correctly but could not catch Sananta's shot. Then Luong Duy Cuong beat keeper Ari with a shot to the left corner. The score is 5-5 now.

  • Frengky Missa tricked keeper Van Chuan to make it 3-2 for Indonesia and Vo Nguyen Hoang made it 3-3 for Vietnam.

After winning two group stage matches, defeating Laos 4-1 and Philippines 1-0, Vietnam entered the semifinals and thrashed Malaysia 4-1.

Shin Tae-yong's team advanced to the semifinals as the best second-placed team. But in the semifinal, they were dominating hosts Thailand and winning 3-1. Thailand beat Malaysia to win the bronze medal in an earlier match on Saturday.

In this title clash, Vietnam will be eyeing revenge for their SEA Games semifinal loss to Indonesia in May.
