Vietnam secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Singapore in the U23 Asian Cup qualifiers on Saturday, keeping them at the top of Group C with one game remaining.

The match, held in Viet Tri Stadium in northern Vietnam, saw the host struggle to break down Singapore’s defense until the 79th minute when Le Van Thuan scored the only goal of the game.

Vietnam dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match. Their attack started quickly, but Singapore’s well-organized defense frustrated the host. Vietnam registered 10 shots in the first half but failed to convert any, with Viktor Le's shot from 25 meters being the closest attempt. Vietnam came close again when Pham Minh Phuc’s long pass set up Viktor for a tap-in, but he hit the post in the 33rd minute.S

The second half saw more action as Vietnam pushed for the opening goal. Coach Kim Sang-sik brought on fresh legs, including Thuan and Nguyen Huy Hoang, hoping to find the breakthrough.

Thuan had a dangerous shot early, but Singapore’s goalkeeper, Yazid, made the save. As the pressure mounted, Vietnam continued to make attacking changes. Their persistence paid off in the 79th minute when Thuan made a powerful header off a cross from Hoang, giving Vietnam the lead.

The goal proved to be the match-winner, as Singapore couldn’t find a response.

Singapore’s resilience was tested when captain Syafiz Rashid was sent off in the 90th minute after receiving a second yellow card for a foul in midfield, leaving Singapore with 10 men for the final moments of the match.

Vietnam’s win keeps them on track to secure their place in the next stage of the U23 Asian Cup qualifiers, with their next challenge coming against Yemen on Tuesday.
