Malaysia claim FIFA ASEAN Cup third place by beating Vietnam for first time in 12 years

Malaysia beat Vietnam 1-0 to claim third place in the FIFA ASEAN Cup, ending a 12-year wait for a win over their regional rivals.

Center back Bui Hoang Viet Anh even pushed up to the edge of the penalty area, brought down a second ball and volleyed with his right foot, but the shot was straight at Hazmi, who kept it out and needed two attempts to hold it.

    From the left flank, Phan Tuan Tai skillfully slipped the ball through a defender's legs and sent a low cross into the penalty area. Dinh Bac controlled it and laid it off to Le Van Do, but his shot could not get through the crowd of yellow shirts. Moments later, Le Pham Thanh Long sent in a ball that was half cross, half shot toward the left post, but Hazmi had the situation well under control.

    After reviewing the video, the South Korean referee returned to the pitch and announced his reasoning directly to the stadium. He said the Malaysian player had won the ball with his tackle and there would be no penalty for Vietnam.

    Referee Ko Hyung-jin pointed to the spot, ruling that Haiqal had fouled Le Van Do with a sliding tackle. The Malaysian players protested immediately, convinced that Haiqal had won the ball.

    Ngo Dang Khoa was hurt after stretching for the ball in a challenge on the touchline, forcing coach Kim to send on Le Van Do in his place. Apart from goalkeepers Nguyen Van Viet and Tran Trung Kien and forward Pham Gia Hung, Vietnam have now used 20 players at the FIFA ASEAN Cup.
