U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea Chairman Kim Jong-un abruptly cut short their second day of meetings at a summit in Hanoi on Thursday after the two leaders failed to reach an agreement to dismantle that country’s nuclear weapons.
Although Kim said he was ready in principle to denuclearize, he and Trump ended their meetings without sitting for a planned lunch and without participating in a joint signing ceremony.
Trump said at a press conference, held at the JW Marriot Hotel after the summit, that he and Kim could not agree on sanction matter.
"Basically they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn't do that," he said.
"We want to give up the sanctions because that country has so much economic potentials. But only when they agree to give up their nuclear," Trump said, adding that Kim just wants to denuclearize in areas that are less important.
Yet he also said that the parting was friendly and his relationship with Kim remains strong.
He said he trusts that Kim is not doing any nuclear tests and he is not going to impose further sanctions on North Korea.
There’s no current plans for the third summit, he said, ending the conference before flying back to Washington the same afternoon.
