Fuel tanker up in flames on Mekong Delta expressway

A fuel tanker running on the HCMC-Trung Luong expressway caught fire on Thursday, burning its driver and rendering a 10-km road section congested.

The truck was running caught fire near Tan An City of Long An Province at around 2 p.m.

The driver then directed the tanker off the expressway and towards the National Highway 62, using fire extinguishers to get rid of the flames, but failed. Passersby then called firefighters to the rescue.

Following the incident, the tanker was heavily damaged, while the driver suffered burns on his arms and face. Traffic was impeded afterwards, resulting in a congestion spanning around 10 km. Police officers were dispatched to re-route vehicles.

The HCMC-Trung Luong Expressway spans 62 km and has four lanes. It has been operational since 2010, with a maximum speed of 100 kph. In 2019, when tolls stopped being collected, the amount of traffic on the road increased by 30%, totaling to 40,000-50,000 vehicles using the expressway a day.
