Vietnam claimed first victory at Asian Cup Thursday (Hanoi time), beating Yemen 2-0 in the final match of group D.
Nguyen Quang Hai took a skillful free kick and scored for Vietnam in the 39th minute. Que Ngoc Hai doubled the score in the 64th minute from a penalty as a foul was committed in the box.
Yemen had several dangerous shots but failed to hit the goal.
Both Vietnam and Yemen entered the game having lost two games. But Yemen's Asian Cup run just ended with the third loss.
A gap of three goals would secure Vietnam a spot in the next round, but the "Golden Dragons" failed to break Yemen's defense in many attacks.
Round of 16 will open for four best third-placed teams from the six groups. With the current achievement, Vietnam are now among the candidates, but the final list is still pending for results from other group state matches.
