Vietnam lost 2-3 to host Indonesia on Sunday but won a slot in the U20 Asian Cup as one of the best second-placed teams.

The game to decide the first place of group F and direct qualification of the 2023 U20 Asian Cup between Vietnam and host Indonesia was intense from the start to the very last minute.

Indonesia pushed forward right after the whistle and cornered Vietnam with many scoring chances, but they lacked accuracy.

After half an hour, Vietnam gradually regained possession and fought back with a few relevant chances. The first half ended without a goal.

In the second half, Indonesia put young talent Marselino Ferdinan on to increase their firepower and it was an effective change. Ferdinan opened the scoring for Indonesia with an excellent strike from outside the box in the 60th minute.

But just six minutes later, Vietnam equalized when captain Khuat Van Khang made a pass from the right flank and it found Nguyen Thanh Nhan, whose shot deflected off Indonesia captain Mohammad Ferrari and went in.

Indonesia tried to put more pressure to seek the winning goal as they subbed in three attackers for three defenders. But that left their defense out in the open and in the 79th minute, Vietnam exploited that with a goal from Dinh Xuan Tien.

Indonesia immediately pushed forward again and leveled the score just three minutes later with a good header from captain Ferrari. With the support from the home fans, Indonesia kept attacking and a mistake from Vietnam keeper Cao Van Binh gave them the third goal.

Binh couldn’t save Alfriyanto Nico’s shot and the ball found Rabbano Tasnim, who easily tap into the empty net.

The game ended with a 3-2 win for the host and they have directly qualified for the U20 Asian Cup next year, while Vietnam qualified as one of the best second-placed teams.
