Vietnam beat Indonesia 1-0 in tense AFC U23 qualifier

MAR. 24, 2019

Vietnam failed at many attempts to break through the all-offensive Indonesia, and only scored from a corner in the last minute.

Vietnam had a difficult time beating Indonesia in the second qualifier for the AFC U23 Championship, and they only did it in the last minute.

Nguyen Quang Hai took a corner after a highly anticipated free-kick failed, and Trieu Viet Hung scored from the header in the last fourth extra minute of the second half.

Vietnam were awarded three free-kicks and brought the ball inside the box many times, but they lacked decision and power to turn any shots into goals.

Several defense mistakes, including one when goalkeeper Bui Tien Dung passed the ball to an Indonesian player, almost cost Vietnam the game.

Vietnam, who defeated Brunei 6-0, will play their last 2020 AFC U23 qualifier against Thailand on Tuesday.

Thailand currently tops group K after beating Brunei 8-0 and Indonesia 4-0. As the host of 2020 AFC U23 Championship, Thailand is already in, while Vietnam needs to top the group or become one of the five best second-placed teams of 11 groups.
