However, the gap has been narrowing. Vietnam recently stunned Thailand at the 2025 SEA V.League and coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's squad entered the SEA Games final in peak form, having swept Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines without dropping a single set.
Vietnam got off to a dream start on Monday, taking the first set 25-19.
This lead has a significant meaning: in their previous 11 finals meetings, Vietnam had lost every time, winning only a total of three sets against Thailand's 33.
However, Thailand responded with the class of a top Asian powerhouse. They adjusted their tempo and attack, overwhelming Vietnam to take the second set 25-13 and the third 25-18.
With their backs against the wall, Vietnam found the way out in the fourth set. Capitalizing on Thai errors and maintaining composure, they got their decisive moment. Thanh Thuy delivered a crucial strike that ricocheted off the Thailand block and landed on the ground, sealing a 25-23 victory in this set.
This marked the first time in SEA Games history that Vietnam had ever taken two sets off Thailand in a gold medal match.
Volleyball is one of the most loved sports in Thailand. Therefore, the atmosphere at the final was electric, with many Thai celebrities including Miss Universe 2023 runner-up Anntonia Porsild (C) cheering on the hosts.
The deciding fifth set was played with extreme intensity. Vietnam surged to a commanding 10-5 lead, needing just five more points for the gold medal. However, Thailand relentlessly clawed their way back.
The tension peaked in the final moments. Vietnam held advantages at 17-16, 22-21, and 23-22, standing on the brink of match point multiple times but failing to convert their chances.
