Southern Hanoi encounters huge traffic jams as holiday starts
Hanoi’s southern gateways to provinces experienced huge traffic jams late Friday with cars and motorbikes lining up for tens of kilometers as people rushed away from the capital for their three-day holiday starting Saturday.
The traffic almost froze for more than 10 kilometers from Hanoi downtown to Gie Bridge in Hanoi’s Phu Xuyen District.
Thousands of cars got stuck on the belt highway 3 connecting Hanoi to other provinces.
From 4 p.m. vehicles were almost unable to move from Phap Van – Cau Gie crossroad toward Ha Nam province.
An accident involving two cars and killing a man on Phap Van-Cau Gie highway in Hanoi’s Thanh Tri District made the traffic even worse.
About four kilometers from the accident, a coach slammed into other cars, damaging three.
Transport police overseeing the highway said they have sent forces to handle the accidents.
Transport police had to re-direct vehicles on Phap Van –Cau Gie crossroad to avoid further jams.
As tickets were sold out, people flooded the road to catch coaches, worsening the situation.
Giai Phong and Ngoc Hoi streets were congested starting beginning of the afternoon. Vehicles could only move easily after 7:30 p.m yesterday.
