Floods triggered by Typhoon Matmo have left nearly 2,000 homes in Lang Son Province submerged up to their rooftops for at least three days, cutting off 10,000 residents who are surviving on rooftops, boats, and even mountain caves as they wait for the waters to recede.

Typhoon Matmo made landfall in southern Guangxi, China, early on Oct. 6. Its circulation brought heavy rain to Vietnam's Lang Son Province at the border from the night of Oct. 5 until Oct. 8. Floodwaters rose quickly, cutting off 15 hamlets in Van Nham Commune. Nearly 2,000 households with about 10,000 residents have been affected.

In the photo, part of Tu Nhien Hamlet, Van Nham Commune, is seen submerged in floodwaters on Oct. 9.

An electric pole in Tu Nhien Hamlet was submerged about 3 meters deep. So far, the entire hamlet still has no electricity.
