The Da Nang Department of Culture and Sports on Saturday kick-started the Flying Over Tien Sa paragliding tournament at Son Tra Peninsula and Tho Quang Beach.
120 pilots from 15 Vietnamese clubs, along with a Lao and a Thai club, participated in the event.

Nguyen Trong Thao, vice director of the Da Nang culture department, said the tournament is to evaluate Son Tra as a gliding spot, as well as the operation capabilities of the Da Nang Paragliding Club.

Da Nang's paragliding tournament was first organized in 2014, with over 40 pilots participating at the time. In 2017, the tournament attracted over 100 pilots from many countries, including South Korea, the U.S., the U.K and Australia.
A pilot hovers just above the ground, then uses the engine to propel themselves upward. Pilots must land within designated circles to achieve high scores in the tournament.
At noon, pilots move to an empty land plot to begin paragliding performances without engines.
Trang Bun, from Hanoi, said while she had paraglided in many places, she likes Da Nang the most.
"Paragliding helps me relieve stress and gives me energy," she said.
Pilots check the winds before paragliding. In the morning, wind patterns were not ideal, so many pilots had trouble taking off. In the afternoon, the tournament had to be suspended due to the rain.
