Supermarket shelves were emptied by Wednesday noon in the south-central provinces of Gia Lai and Dak Lak as people bought and stockpiled food before Typhoon Kalmaegi makes landfall.

Ngo Thi Thoa, 57, who was at the supermarket, said she only bought enough food for one or two days.

“My house is right in the bustling downtown area, so there is no need to buy too much.”

The GO! supermarket in the same ward was also packed. Dao Duy Tan, who manages the bakery counter there, said stocks kept running out through the morning.

“We sold more than 7,000 loaves, triple the usual number.”
