Waves driven by Typhoon Ragasa smashed the glass doors of the five-star Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel and flooded its lobby as hurricane-force winds battered Hong Kong, toppling trees and inundating coastal areas.

A widely shared video shows floodwater surging into the lobby and sweeping a man off his feet while staff urge people to leave the area on Wednesday, The Standard reported.

The water level appears to reach about knee height.

"No injury is reported; we have deployed additional resources, and are doing all we can to mitigate the impact brought about by the super typhoon to safeguard the safety and well-being of our guests," the hotel said in a statement.

The waterfront property has 425 rooms and suites with ocean views and is among Hong Kong's prominent luxury accommodations.

Ragasa, described as the world's most powerful tropical cyclone this year, bore down on southern China on Wednesday after killing at least 14 people in Taiwan, four in the Philippines, and lashing Hong Kong with ferocious winds and heavy rain, Reuters reported.

Hong Kong raised Signal No. 10, its highest typhoon warning, early on Sept. 24, prompting the shutdown of businesses and transport services.
