Police in Pattaya have detained two Indian tourists for allegedly stealing a camera battery worth 5,000 baht (US$148) from a fellow countryman on the first day of their trip to Thailand.

The arrests were made on Thursday after an Indian man filed a complaint with the police, stating that his camera battery pack had been stolen at a cannabis shop on Walking Street, according to The Pattaya News.

The victim told police that after entering the shop, he placed his camera battery pack on a sofa while browsing products.

Based on CCTV footage, two foreign men were seen entering the shop. One sat on the battery pack to cover it, while the other discreetly slipped it into his bag. The suspects then left the shop, as reported by Khaosod English.

Upon investigation, police identified the suspects as Indian citizens who had just arrived in Thailand on Sept. 4.

According to Thailand's Criminal Code, those convicted of theft can face up to three years in prison and a fine of 6,000 baht.

Thailand is currently waiving visa requirements for Indian tourists until November, allowing them to stay for a maximum of 30 days.
