Senegalese-Italian influencer Khaby Lame, the world's most popular TikTok personality with 162 million followers, recently toured several major Chinese cities and immersed himself in local culture and cuisine.

Lame, 25, arrived in Beijing on Sept. 9 and donned the ancient emperor's dragon robe at the Palace Museum, the South China Morning Post reported.

He posed for a photo against the iconic red wall, dressed in a Zhongshan suit, which soon became known as his "life photo."

During his visit to the Panjiayuan Antique Market, Lame purchased a Chinese folding fan inscribed with the words "nihao zhongguo," meaning "hello China" in calligraphy.

The following day, Lame traveled to Tianjin, a city neighboring Beijing.

He wore a T-shirt featuring the phrase "China old iron," a slang term from northeastern China meaning "China’s good friend."

In Tianjin, he explored local specialties, including kuai ban, an oral storytelling performance popular in northern China, and tried his hand at making Tianjin's famous crepe jianbing guozi.

On Sept. 11, Lame arrived in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, where he played football with a local team and visited the Hongshan Forest Zoo, known for its animal-centered habitats.

Shanghai, with its unique blend of ancient and modern features, captivated Lame during the trip.

He remarked, "Modern cities often demolish old buildings to build skyscrapers, but Shanghai still retains its old features, both charming and modern financial center of the country," China Daily reported.

According to Kuaishou, China's second-largest short-video platform, Lame continued his China trip in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, on Sept. 17.

Lame rose to international fame during the pandemic without ever saying a word in his videos, which would show him reacting to absurdly complicated "life hacks."

The China Tourism Academy's 2024-2025 inbound tourism report noted a 61% year-on-year increase in international visitors to China, reaching 131.9 million last year, including 26.94 million foreign visitors (up 96%) thanks to the visa-free policy applied to 63 countries.
