World's 1st immersive theme park to close in February, two years after opening

A theme park in Japan that billed itself as the world's first fully immersive attraction will close on Feb. 28, about two years after opening, its operator said.

The Immersive Fort Tokyo project "deviated substantially from the original plan, including in financial terms," Tsuyoshi Morioka, chief executive officer of Katana Inc., said in a statement on Thursday, Kyodo News Agency reported.

Immersive Fort Tokyo opened in March 2024 in the popular commercial district of Odaiba and recreates the settings of popular animation and stories, giving visitors an immersive experience of playing characters and interacting with cast members, Japan News reported.

The theme park was known for recreating the worlds of novels and anime through a combination of video technology and live performances, allowing visitors to assume the roles of characters within the stories.

Japan welcomed an estimated 39.06 million foreign visitors from January to November, surpassing last year's record of 36.87 million.
