The victims, both from Selangor, are believed to have been swept away by strong currents while bathing at a popular beach around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 22, as reported by The Star.
Police were alerted to the incident through an emergency call.
Both victims were rescued by members of the public using a jet ski and brought to shore before being transported to a local hospital for treatment, Free Malaysia Today reported.
Unfortunately, they were pronounced dead by medical officers.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims had traveled to the island for a family vacation and were swimming at the public beach area when the incident occurred.
Langkawi, located about 30 km off the northwestern coast of Malaysia, is an archipelago of 99 islands. It is renowned for being a duty-free destination, where most necessities are tax-free.
The island has a tropical monsoon climate, with a short dry season from December to February and a lengthy rainy season from March to November.
