The government aims to transform Vietnam's largest island Phu Quoc into a world-class destination, placing it among the world's 10 largest and most attractive islands that could compete with famous spots like Bali and Phuket.

During a recent meeting with Kien Giang Province, home to Phu Quoc, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung emphasized the significance of hosting the APEC 2027 Summit Week on the island, calling it a "golden opportunity" for the island to realize its full potential and contribute to elevating Vietnam's international standing.

He urged provincial authorities to preserve Phu Quoc's core values, including eco-tourism and world-class tourism.

Known for its pristine beaches and luxury resorts, Phu Quoc is a popular destination for both domestic and international travelers.

Following a tourism slump in 2023, the island has swiftly regained its reputation, enhancing the quality of its services.

Phu Quoc welcomed more than 2 million visitors in the first quarter of this year, including 474,468 foreign tourists, a 66.5% year-on-year increase.

The island eyes 1 million foreign visitors by the end of this year.

In 2024, Phu Quoc received over 5.9 million visitors overall, up 7.1% from the previous year, including 963,000 international arrivals.

It was also voted the world's second most beautiful island after the Maldives by readers of Travel + Leisure last year.
