The much-anticipated annual fireworks festival in Da Nang has been cut in half from two months to one.

Authorities in the central city of Da Nang have confirmed that the international fireworks festival will return on June 1 and wrap up on July 6, taking place every Saturday, instead of stretching over two months as in previous two years.

Huynh Van Hung, director of Da Nang’s Department of Culture and Sports, explained that the city had previously wanted to spread out the festival throughout the summer holiday in order to attract more tourists.

But the prolonged duration created difficulties for the organizers, he added.

This year, eight teams from Italy, Russia, Brazil, Belgium, Holland, the U.K., China and the home team of Da Nang will present pyrotechnic displays over five nights.

The month long event will feature a fireworks competition every week on different themes - Origin, Seed, Love, Colors and Going out to Sea - leading into the grand finale between two finalists on the theme of Stories by the Rivers.

The festival will also have other cultural features including music, street carnivals, dance and art shows.

Entrance tickets are priced from VND300,000 to VND1.2 million ($13 to $52).

Da Nang held the first International Fireworks Competition in 2008. In 2017, the transformation of the event from a two-day competition to a two month-long festival helped maintain its status as a leading tourism hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

Last year, Da Nang received 7.6 million tourists, 2.87 million of them foreigners, a 23.3 percent increase year-on-year.

Earlier this year, The New York Times ranked the central coastal city among 52 best places to go in 2019, dubbing it "the Miami of Vietnam."
