Video of Bill Gates eating durian in Singapore goes viral

A video of American billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates eating durian at Singapore's Newton Food Center has gone viral on social media, sparking interest among netizens.

The clip, posted on TikTok by @rebecca89292 on Tuesday morning, has garnered over 611,000 views and many comments.

The video shows Gates sitting at a table, with his security staff and other diners looking on. He first lifts a pulp of durian to his nose, gives his head a slight shake, then proceeds to take not one, but two bites. After chewing, he sets the fruit down and shakes his head again gently.

Gates' appearance at the food court has piqued the curiosity of netizens.

"Who is this old man? So many people came to take his photo," one netizen commented.

"We love Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft. Spending the rest of his life giving his money away to good causes. Well done," another user added.

"He's rich, but he's very humble. I love Bill Gates," a third netizen remarked.

Gates co-founded Microsoft in 1975, a company that made him one of the wealthiest individuals in the world. In 1999, he became the first centibillionaire when his net worth surpassed US$100 billion.

As of May 7, Forbes lists his net worth at $112.5 billion, making him the world's 13th richest person.

The billionaire was in Singapore to speak at the Philanthropy Asia Summit 2025, where he announced that his non-profit organization, the Gates Foundation, will be opening an office in the country.
