A male tourist from mainland China was confirmed dead on Sunday after plunging off a cliff at Lion Rock mountain, a popular hiking destination in Hong Kong.

On Sunday afternoon, police received a report saying that he slipped while climbing the rock face and fell from a height of about 25m, South China Morning Post reported.

A helicopter airlifted him to a nearby hospital, but he was later pronounced dead, Dimsum Daily reported.

He was part of a group of tourists who had begun their hike at about 10 a.m.

Police are investigating his death.

Lion Rock is a 495m-high mountain with rugged landscape where visitors can view Kowloon Peninsula, Victoria Harbor and Hong Kong Island from its top.

In 2022, a 36-year-old man died after falling off a cliff on the rocky mountain. His body was found some 80 m downslope by rescuers.

In January this year, a 55-year-old woman fell 20 m from a cliff-face in the same area. She was taken unconscious to a hospital and later died.
