The Korea Tourism Organization has named boy band BLANK2Y as South Korea's honorary ambassador for tourism to Vietnam at a time when both countries are seeking to revive tourism.

During its one-year tenure, the nine-member band will undertake tourism promotion through K-pop.

They are scheduled to perform during the Korean Days cultural event in Hanoi in November.

"Vietnam has shown bigger interest in K-pop as well as Korean culture than any other region," Lee Jae Hoon, chief representative of KTO in Vietnam, said as quoted by the government's portal.

"Therefore, the South Korean government wants to boost its tourism image among Vietnamese people through Hallyu."

The South Korean government has lifted most Covid restrictions and resumed visa waivers to attract Vietnamese tourists, he said.

South Korea had become a favorite tourist destination for Vietnamese before the pandemic began, with over 550,000 visiting in 2019.

Vietnam reopened to international tourism with quarantine-free entry from March 15 and resumed 15-day visa waivers for tourists from South Korea, its second largest market before the pandemic.
