Thanh Hoa, the capital city of the province of the same name in central Vietnam, is considering designating a street walking-only to serve a nighttime public plaza.

The People's Committee said Monday the city Party Committee has agreed in principle with making Phan Chu Trinh a pedestrians-only street and Lam Son Square a public cultural space.

For amusement, there will be cultural, musical, sports and games, stalls offering portraiture, and others.

Three streets around Lam Son Square, Ly Nhan Tong, Ho Xuan Huong and Nguyen Don Tiet, will have fast food kiosks and shops selling souvenirs, books and beverages.

A 500 m section on the Phan Chu Trinh Street will be a shopping area with mobile stalls selling artisan products, jewelry, clothes, and other items.

The street will be off-limits to vehicles from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. every day in summer, and from 6:30 p.m. in winter.

Relevant authorities have been instructed to submit reports about the project to the Standing Party Committee before March 20.

If approved, the first walking-only street in Thanh Hoa could be ready as early as at the end of this month.

It was first proposed four years ago, but went on the backburner due to Covid.
