Cambodia began the construction of a new $1.35 billion expressway to Vietnam's western province of Tay Ninh on Wednesday.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Vietnam in Cambodia Nguyen Huy Tang participated in the project’s ground breaking ceremony in the capital city of Phnom Penh, Voice of Vietnam (VOV) reported.

Prime Minister Sen said the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway would bolster Cambodia’s socio-economic development, especially in terms of trade, commerce and tourism between Cambodia and other countries in the region, including Vietnam.

The four-lane, 135-km expressway will begin in Phnom Penh City and then run through Kandal, Prey Veng and Svay Rieng provinces. It will connect with Vietnam at the Moc Bai border gate in Tay Ninh, which connects with Bavet City in Svay Rieng on the Cambodian side.

At the border, the new road will connect with Vietnam’s upcoming Moc Bai-HCMC Expressway.
