Netflix has raised the price of its premium plan in Vietnam by VND13,000 to VND273,000 (US$10.45) following a hike in tax rates from Tuesday.

Since late June many users have been informed by Netflix about a revision in the subscription from July 1.

It now charges VND74,000 for the mobile-only plan with 480p resolution, VND114,000 for the standard plan with 720p, VND231,000 for Full HD, and VND273,000 for the 4K-supported package, all around 5% higher. It told users in an email the adjustment is due to tax changes.

Under the 2024 Value-Added Tax Law, which came into effect Tuesday, digital services provided by foreign companies without a permanent establishment in Vietnam are now subject to a 10% VAT rate, up from the previous 5%.

Other international online platforms such as Meta and Google have also notified users of price hikes, particularly those running advertisements on these services.

Huu Tri, a veteran digital advertiser, said many major foreign platforms operating in Vietnam increased their prices by 10% from July.

"Most advertising agencies were prepared for this. The higher costs mean we now have to optimize ad performance more carefully."

But some services like Google One and YouTube Premium have not yet announced pricing changes for individual users.

Many typically list prices exclusive of taxes.
