Veteran shooter exits Tokyo Olympics

Vinh competed with 35 opponents at once. Each shooter got six turns, with each turn comprising 10 shots. The top eight would advance to the final.

The 47-year-old started strong, making it into the top 10 at times. But in the last three turns, his accuracy dropped. After a total 60 shots, Vinh only scored 573 points, placing 22nd.

In the first two shots, Vinh scored 10 points each. But in the next five, he only managed nine. When the first turn ended, he peaked at 28th.

In the second turn, he improved by scoring 10 points eight times in a row, and nine twice in a row, pushing him into the top 10. Inconsistency saw him exit the top 20.

Elimination saw him unable to defend the gold medal he won at the 2016 Olympics.

"I'm sorry. I tried my best but the result is not what I expected. I had a muscle problem in the fourth turn so I couldn't maintain my form," Vinh said.

Back in 2016, Vinh made it past the first round with 581 points, then went all the way to claim gold in the final, beating the world number one at the time, Brazilian Felipe Almeida Wu.

After five years, Vinh has dropped from number one to 38th. This might be the last Olympics of his career. Vinh failed to qualify directly for Tokyo this year and only got a ticket thanks to an invitation slot from the organizers.
