Ly Hoang Nam has won in the opening round of the M15 Sharm El Sheikh tournament in Egypt.

The world number 718 played Italy’s Gramaticopolo (1156th) in the first match on Wednesday. The Vietnamese star showed high determination and won 6-3 in the first set then continued to lead 2-0 in the second before Gramaticopolo quitted the match.

This is Nam’s first win after nearly two years without taking part in any international tournament due to Covid-19 pandemic. This victory added one point to Nam’s total points on the ranking.

In the next round, Nam will play another Italian, Francesco Vilardo (world number 766th).

After helping Vietnam advance in the Davis Cup tournament last month, Nam has been in Egypt since Sept. 28 trying to improve his current world ranking, which has dropped to 781 after peaking at 385 in 2018.

This is Nam’s second M15 Sharm El Sheikh tournament, after the first in October 7, where he made an early exit after losing the opening game. This M15 Sharm El Sheikh event will take place from Oct. 11 to 17.

According to plan, Nam will stay in Egypt to compete in the multiple M15 tournaments from October to November.
