Huyen, the 2019 World Cup gold medalist, lifted 73 kg in the snatch and 92 kg in the clean and jerk categories, and claimed another gold for lifting a total of 168kg in the women’s 45kg division.
Her teammate, Khong My Phuong, lifted 70kg and bagged a bronze medal in the snatch event. She finished fourth in total with 157kg.
Huyen said she was not satisfied despite winning the gold because her lift was 2kg less than her total at the 2019 World Cup in February.
However, her coach, Nguyen Manh Thang, said that her performance was acceptable since it was not long since she had changed to compete in the 45kg division.
Another Vietnamese weightlifter participating in the tournament, Thach Kim Tuan, won bronze in the men’s 61kg division with a total lift of 136kg.
The 2019 Asian Weightlifting Championships is being held in China's eastern coastal city of Ningbo from April 20 to 28.
This tournament is one of the qualifiers that help athletes accumulate points to win an official ticket to next year’s Olympics.
