To prepare for the Davis Cup World Group 2 play-off next year, three Vietnamese players will compete in five consecutive tournaments in Egypt starting October.

On Saturday, Vietnam defeated Malaysia 2-0 in the play-off of Davis Cup Asia-Oceania zone Group 3 and qualified for the World Group 2 play-off.

The World Group 2 play-off will take place in March. If Vietnam win this game, they will stay in World Group 2 and get to compete in the World Group 1 play-off. If Vietnam lose, they would be dropped back to Asia-Oceania zone Group 3.

To prepare for the important play-off, three players in Vietnam’s national tennis team - Ly Hoang Nam, Vu Ha Minh Duc and Nguyen Van Phuong will go to Egypt and play five competitions of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Men’s World Tennis Tour.

Vietnam’s number one player Hoang Nam is 738th in world rankings. His highest rank was 385th but he hasn’t played any international tournaments for nearly two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. His goal in Egypt will be to improve his position. Neither Duc or Phuong are ranked and will have to play the qualifiers first before entering the main event.

The five tournaments in Egypt will take place from Oct. 4 to Nov. 7.
