Vietnamese karate athlete Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly won a gold medal at the 2022 World Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships Saturday.

Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly beat Morocco's Nejma Imitik 2-0 in the finals of the Junior Kumite Female - 53 kg category. She'd beaten opponents from El Salvador, Germany, Slovakia and Algeria to reach the finals.

Ly's gold medal is the first that Vietnam has won at the championship's junior kumite category.

Before Ly, Nguyen Phuong Thao reached the finals of the junior female - 48 kg category, but lost to Egypt's Aly Ganna 0-8 - and brought home a silver medal.

The 2022 World Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships is being held in Konya, Turkey. A total of 1,861 athletes from 105 countries and territories are participating in the event.
