World number 6 Tran Quyet Chien defeated Korea’s Cho Myung-woo 40-38 to earn his first regional trophy.

In a nail-biting encounter, the Vietnamese cueist inched past his opponent in the final Thursday to win the 3-cushion title at the 2019 Asian Carom Billiards Championship.

Chien, 36, was in trouble in the beginning at 22-38 but capitalized on his opponent`s mistakes to level the scores and storm to a 40-38 victory to the enthusiastic cheering of the home audience.

With this championship, Chien earns 80 points and has the chance to rise to third place in the UMB (Union Mondiale de Billiard) World Ranking.

Last year, Chien, from the southern province of Ca Mau, also cued in a new chapter in Vietnam’s billiards history, claiming his maiden championship at the 2018 Three-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup held in Ho Chi Minh City from May 21 to 27.

The 2019 Asian Carom Billiards Championship is an annual tournament under the UMB system.

Its 10th edition is being held in HCMC from April 23 to 27, 2019 with the participation of 48 cueists.

Another Vietnamese representative, Do Nguyen Trung Hau, finished third along with Korea’s Kang Dong-koong.

In the 1-cushion carom content, Vietnamese veteran Ma Minh Cam convincingly beat Korea’s Seo Hyun-min 100-21 in the final on Tuesday.
