Hoang Thi Duyen proved on form at 2020 Roma Weightlifting World Cup, scooping three gold medals at the Olympic qualifying competition.

On January 29, Duyen competed in the final of the women's 59 kg category, easily shifting 92 kg, 95 kg and 97 kg in three attempts. Following close behind came Italy's Maria Alemanno with 89 kg and Canadian Tali Darsigny with 88 kg.

The 24-year-old weightlifter continued her amazing performance in the clean and jerk category. And after three tries, she was able to lift 116 kg, three kilos more than runner-up Marianne Saarhelo of Finland.

Her tournament weight total was 213 kg, followed by Saarhelo and Darsigny. Duyen's result at the event proved 3 kg better than her recent best at SEA Games last December.

The gold hat trick also strengthens her position in the world top eight of the 59 kg category, moving her closer to a slot at 2020 Tokyo Olympics this summer.

At 2020 Roma Weightlifting World Cup, five Vietnamese athletes brought home 10 gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Thach Kim Tuan (men's 61kg) and Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan (men's 55kg) won three gold medals each. Khong My Phuong (women's 45kg) won one gold and two silver medals while Vuong Thi Huyen (women's 49kg) bagged two bronzes.

Tuan is also close to secure a place at the Olympics as he also finished in the top eight.

2020 Weightlifting World Cup in Roma takes place from January 27 to 31, the first Olympic qualifying competition of the year.

Weightlifters will next compete at International Weightlifting Federation Asian Championships in Kazakhstan in April, another Olympic qualifier.
