Vietnamese youth underlined their chess aptitude with three gold, four silver and two bronze medals at a regional tournament.

Tong Thai Hoang An convincingly won the U8 category with eight points in nine games, and Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong topped the U16 category with seven points.

But it was Nguyen Hong Anh in the U18 category who pulled off a big surprise.

Anh, the number 9 seed, started with just 1,880 Elo points, but she ended 1.5 points higher than the runner-up and earned an impressive 2,228 performance rating.

Vietnam pocketed four more silver medals thanks to Le Thai Hoang Anh (Girl U8), Nguyen Linh Dan (G12), Nguyen Manh Duc (U8) and Tran Minh Quang (U14).

The team’s bronze medalists were Nguyen Quoc Hy (U14) and Nguyen Mai Chi (G8).

Coming in second at the tournament was Kazakhstan with three gold and one silver medals. Powerhouse India finished third with two gold, four silver and two bronze medals. China won just one gold medal.

The 2019 Asian Youth Chess Championship took place in Sri Lanka from April 3 - 9, with nine standard games. The tournament attracted 571 players from 23 countries and territories.

Vietnam had the third highest number of participants with 36, behind hosts Sri Lanka (277) and India (75).
