Vietnam clinch gold medals at world Muay Thai tournament

Vietnamese athletes claimed six medals including two golds at the IFMA World Muay Thai Championships 2021 in Thailand.

Huynh Ha Huu Hieu in the U23 women’s 45 kilogram and Bang Thi Mai in the women’s 60 kilogram categories both won gold.

Hieu defeated Russian opponent Bella Durandina in the final, while Mai bested Iranian fighter Fatemeh Hosseini.

In the 63.5 kilograms for women, Nguyen Thi Phuong Hau lost to Tugce Bektas of Turkey and settled for a silver medal. The three bronze medals belonged to Le Hoang Duc (men’s 48 kilograms), Le Duc Hoan (U23 men’s 51 kilograms) and Bui Hai Linh (U23 women’s 54 kilograms).

The national Muay Thai team of Vietnam attended the tournament with 25 members, including 17 athletes. The team will return to Vietnam on Tuesday.

World Muay Thai Championships 2021 took place from Dec. 4 to 12 in Bangkok, Thailand and was hosted by the International Federation of Muay Thai Associations (IFMA). The tournament is a celebration of the recognition of Muay Thai as a sport at this year’s Olympics.
