Vietnam earned their second consecutive victory at the Chess Olympiad Saturday, defeating Costa Rica 3-1.

Playing against opponents with lower Elo ratings, the Vietnamese players won two and drew two matches.

Nguyen Thien Ngan, 17, made a winning debut at the tournament against Araya Mayorga, while Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong beat Rodriguez Arrieta.

Nguyen Thi Mai Hung and Vo Thi Kim Phung drew their matches against Diaz Charpentier and Hernandez Alvarez, respectively.

In the first round of the women’s event at 2022 Chess Olympiad Friday, Vietnam beat Thailand 3-1.

They will play Poland, a stronger opponent, in the third round Sunday.

The 2022 Chess Olympiad, held July 29 - Aug. 9 in Chennai, India, features 1,736 players from 186 countries and territories, including world number one Magnus Carlsen.

The Chess Olympiad is considered one of the biggest competitions in the sport.

The women's group has 799 athletes from 160 countries, with the host allowed to register three teams.

Vietnamese women ranked 37th after the first two rounds.

Vietnam did not send the men’s team to the tournament since all top players are busy. China, Russia and Belarus did not sent their teams, either.
