Nguyen Tien Minh, a one-time World Championship bronze medalist, beat a series of Chinese players en route to the victory.

Minh, 36, won the BWF Future Series tournament in New Zealand on Sunday by beating China's Gao Zhengzhe 21-13, 21-15.

The top seed had defeated China’s Gun Junfeng in the quarterfinals and Tang Kaifeng in the semifinals.

It was the first title of the year for the world number 64.

The former world number 4 is Vietnam’s most successful ever player, and won a bronze medal in the 2013 World Badminton Championship.

The veteran next plays in the Yonex Waikato International Series tournament also in New Zealand from March 28 to 31.
