Why running in Da Nang is top choice for marathoners this summer

Da Nang is emerging as Vietnam’s summer race-cation capital, offering vibrant coastal routes, diverse tourism services, and an active running community.

Da Nang offers a running route that stretches from the city center to coastal roads, providing runners with constantly changing scenery and a wide range of emotions. Crossing multiple bridges such as Tran Thi Ly, Tien Son, and Thuan Phuoc adds moderate elevation challenges, enough to boost excitement without creating excessive strain.

At the end of July, VnExpress Marathon, the largest running event in Da Nang, will take place, featuring a route that passes through many of the city's iconic landmarks. In the 42 km distance, runners will start on Phan Dang Luu Street, go through major roads such as Nui Thanh, Duy Tan, Le Duan, Nguyen Tat Thanh, conquer Thuan Phuoc Bridge, and continue along the scenic coastal roads of Hoang Sa and Vo Nguyen Giap before finishing at East Sea park.

"Da Nang course isn’t completely flat, so it’s not easy to set PR. However, it’s one of the most vibrant routes, offering a harmonious blend of cityscapes, rivers, beaches, and bridges. That’s why I chose it as my summer destination, not just to conquer the distance, but to truly enjoy a meaningful sports vacation," said Phu Dat, a runner from Hanoi.

A favorite race-cation destination

Da Nang is not only a place for competition but also an ideal destination to enjoy a race-cation - combining running with a relaxing vacation. With its open spaces, pleasant early-morning climate, and well-developed tourism infrastructure, the city strikes a perfect balance between athletic challenge and leisure.

In July, Da Nang enters its peak travel season, with streets bustling with food festivals and cultural events.

"My family plans to run in Da Nang, then go to Hoi An to enjoy seafood and relax on the beach. That’s why I chose this race over a more distant location or one with fewer amenities," said Le Hoai Phuong, a runner from Ho Chi Minh City.

From Da Nang, runners can easily access attractions such as Hoi An Ancient Town, Son Tra Peninsula, Ba Na Hills, or simply extend stay on My Khe Beach, frequently ranked among the world’s most beautiful.

"The morning sea breeze at My Khe, sunrise at Dragon Bridge, and the cheers along Vo Nguyen Giap keep bringing me back," said Nguyen Tuan Dung, a 38-year-old runner from Hanoi, who will join VM Danang for the second year.

This year, VnExpress Marathon (VM) Da Nang is expected to attract over 12,000 runners, creating the atmosphere of a large-scale sports festival. Among the thousands starting together, each runner brings a personal goal: setting a new PR, building mental resilience, or simply enjoying the journey of self discovery.

In addition to its unique racecourse, Da Nang’s well-developed service infrastructure is a major advantage. The city offers a wide range of hotels and resorts, along with professional race logistics, from baggage drop and chip timing to water stations and post-race recovery zones. The local running community, experienced pacers, and dedicated volunteers are ready to support visiting runners and share their knowledge, creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere even for first-time participants.

VnExpress Marathon Da Nang 2025 is offering Late registration until July 3. Entry fees range from VND850,000 to VND1.55 million ((US$33-60), depending on the chosen distance. Runners registering during this period will receive benefits including a race kit with a race shirt, finisher shirt (only for 21 km and 42 km distances), a medal, along with other perks such as free finish-line photos, medical insurance, support at hydration stations, and fruit along the course.

The new finish line for the 42 km marathon distance this season will be moved from Tien Son Sports Complex to a dedicated gate at East Sea Park, right by the beach, enhancing the finish-line experience with a scenic coastal backdrop and allowing for greater spectator engagement.
