Marathons emerge as romantic getaways for international couples

More than just sporting events, marathons in Vietnam are increasingly becoming unique settings where international couples create lasting memories.

A shift is underway globally: "run clubs" are replacing nightclubs as preferred spaces for social connection. Strava’s 2024 Year In Sport report highlights this trend, with a rise in health-focused gatherings - a pattern that is clearly taking root in Vietnam.

The VnExpress Marathon (VM) Quy Nhon 2025 is an example, with international couples reporting experiences that went far beyond scenic coastal routes. Many found the event not only physically rewarding but also emotionally enriching - strengthening bonds through shared goals, mutual encouragement, and unforgettable moments.

Vincent Gothknecht, 32, from Germany, and his girlfriend Vo Thi Tram Anh, 31, from Ho Chi Minh City, saw the half marathon at VM Quy Nhon as an opportunity to grow closer.

"I love Vietnam, and I love this girl. I'm really looking forward to finishing the race with her," Vincent said at the VM Expo while collecting their bibs. He completed the race in 1:44:09, while Anh finished in 2:20:11.

This mix of romance and racing was a common theme.

From Belarus, Viktoryia and Artsiom included the VM Quy Nhon in their Vietnam itinerary, running in the 10 km and 21 km categories respectively.

"We just left Nha Trang to come here for this marathon. The beach is beautiful, we’ll definitely swim after the race," Viktoryia said.

This growing phenomenon of "race-cations", combining travel with running, is becoming increasingly popular. For couples, these events offer more than athletic milestones. Training together, supporting each other, and crossing the finish line side by side creates shared stories that deepen their relationships.

Tom Rousselet, 27, from France, and his girlfriend Gaja, 25, from Slovenia, showcased another kind of support. Gaja did not compete, but her presence was vital.

"Tom isn’t in his best shape, but he really wants to finish this race. I’m always by his side to support him," she said, accompanying him throughout his run.

The trend also resonates with local participants.

Vietnamese couple Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, 42, and her husband Harley, 54, both age-group champions at the Mang Den Ultra Trail earlier this year, joined VM Quy Nhon for the joy of shared experience.

"Encouraging each other every kilometer and crossing the finish line together is our greatest reward," said Trang.

Strava’s data further reflects running’s evolving social dimension, with a 59% increase in global running club memberships in 2024, signaling a broader embrace of the sport not just for health, but for connection, and, for some, romance.

At Quy Nhon, the marathon was not just a race. For many couples, it was a love story in motion.
