Vietnam are leading Group A of the U23 Asian Cup after beating Jordan and Kyrgyzstan, yet the Southeast Asian side still need to meet certain conditions when facing hosts Saudi Arabia next week to secure their place in the quarterfinals.

The group remains wide open following Jordan’s surprising 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia on Friday, which left both nations tied with three points each.

Under AFC regulations, head-to-head records among tied teams serve as the primary tiebreaker. Vietnam hold a significant advantage in this regard, as their 2-0 win over Jordan earlier in the tournament gives them a superior goal difference in the potential three-way tiebreaker scenario involving the group's top three sides.

Coach Kim Sang-sik's team will guarantee first place of Group A if they avoid defeat against Saudi Arabia in the final match. Even with a loss, Vietnam would still advance if Jordan fail to beat Kyrgyzstan. In the event that Vietnam lose and Jordan win, creating a three-way tie at six points, Vietnam's fate would depend on the margin of their defeat.

Vietnam would still qualify when losing with one or two goals, as their current goal difference of +2 would keep them ahead of Jordan (-1).

Elimination would only occur under quite specific circumstances, specifically if Vietnam suffer a defeat by three goals or more. A 0-3 defeat would see Vietnam fall behind Jordan on goals scored, while a larger margin would eliminate them on goal difference.

If Vietnam lose 1-4 to Saudi Arabia, they would advance, with a goal difference of -1 and scoring 3 goals the same as Jordan. The tournament regulations stipulate that if more than two teams are tied on points, and after applying all head-to-head criteria (goal difference and number of goals), there is still a small group of teams tied, then all head-to-head criteria will be applied specifically to this group. Therefore, Vietnam will advance thanks to their 2-0 victory over Jordan.

Vietnam faced a similar situation at the U20 Asian Cup 2020. After the first two rounds of Group B, they led with 6 points, three points ahead of Australia and Iran. However, a 1-3 defeat against Iran in the final match dropped the team to third place and unexpectedly eliminated them, due to an inferior head-to-head record against two opponents.

Vietnam remain in a commanding position to reach the knockout stages of the U23 Asian Cup for a third consecutive time, though they will aim for a win to avoid a likely quarterfinal clash with Group B leader Japan.

The situation in Group A still has another possibility. Kyrgyzstan, who lost their previous two matches, could still advance as the second-placed team. The necessary condition is that Vietnam must win against Saudi Arabia and the sufficient condition is that Kyrgyzstan beat Jordan by two goals or more. In that case, the Central Asian representative would have 3 points and a goal difference of +1, while Saudi Arabia have 0 in goal difference and Jordan have -1.
