The 2-1 victory against Malaysia in the World Cup qualifier Friday has seen the national men’s football team move up two places to 90th in the world.

Vietnam earned 7.28 points from the victor to take its accumulated points to 1271.52, surpassing Belarus and Georgia.

The team were previously ranked 92nd on the leader board announced May 27.

The score and rank of Vietnam will change significantly when meeting the next World Cup qualifier opponent UAE, who are ranked 70th in FIFA with 1351.71 points, on June 15.

If Vietnam win, they will add 14.36 more points to reach 1285.88 points. At that time, the men's national football team will have the opportunity to break Vietnam's record of 84th FIFA position in September 1998.

If Vietnam draw with the UAE, they will gain 1.86 points and if they lose, they will lose 10.64 points.

A team’s FIFA ranking affects its seeding in the final round of World Cup qualification.

Vietnam are currently at the top of group G with 17 points, two more than hosts UAE.

A draw against the UAE on June 15 should be enough for Vietnam to advance to the final qualifier of the 2022 World Cup for the first time.

The 12 teams entering the final qualifying round of the World Cup will be divided into six groups of two teams each, according to FIFA rankings.

Of the teams that still have the chance to enter the final qualifiers, only Lebanon, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are below Vietnam in FIFA ranking. But the possibility of these four teams entering the final qualifying round is not high.
