In the important game, Vietnam's main target was not to lose. A win or a draw will get them straight to the next round as one of the best third-placed teams, while a loss means elimination.
The Czech Republic (15th on world ranking) put pressure on Vietnam (41st) most of the time. In the first 10 minutes, they were constantly on the offense but keeper Ho Van Y played excellently. He had six saves in the first half. Vietnam kept a defensive display in order to get at least a draw.
When the first half reached the last minutes, Vietnam had to replace Vu Duc Tung who suffered a serious injury after a clearance attempt.
Entering the second half, Vietnam suddenly dropped the shield and switched to offense. Many chances came, but Nguyen Minh Tri and Nguyen Dac Huy failed to score after facing the keeper in the 27th and 28th minutes.
Vietnam finally found the net in the 35th minute. Chau Doan Phat won the ball in midfield, nutmeg a Czech player before finishing through the legs of keeper Ondrej Vahala.
However, the Czech Republic equalized one minute later, after captain Pham Duc Hoa made a mistake. He passed the ball straight to Czech captain Lukas Resetar, putting him in a comfortable position to score.
In the last minutes, Czech players switched to power play and their keeper also joined the attacks but failed to score more.
A draw is enough for the Czech Republic to keep second place in group D, while Vietnam also advanced with four points (one defeat, one win and one draw). They lost 1-9 to Brazil in the first game and won 3-2 against Panama in the second.
